There is nothing in Judaism or Hellenism to equal the final charge of Jesus at the end of Saint Matthew’s gospel to go ‘and teach all nations’.30 Judaism never produced a missionary like Saint Paul whose hurrying footsteps ‘in journeyings often’31 carried the good news of Jesus Christ right over the northern coasts of the eastern Mediterranean. But how? How did he manage to recommend his message to the people who listened to him? What sort of audience did he find? What sort of culture did he meet?
